2011 Telus Van Isle 360 Leg Ten - Victoria to Nanaimo - 60.4 nm

Leg 10 Winners - Div. 2 - Mojo, My Tai, Havoc

Div 3. winners leg 10 - California Girl, Por Favor, Ion
Leg 10 of the TELUS Van Isle 360 started in what seems like typical (for the Victoria start) boisterous reaching and downwind conditions petering out halfway up Haro Strait. The Forumula 40 Dragonfly and a handful of others, including Havoc, MyTai and Mojo made the early decision to go with the flow and follow the strong flood current out Boundary Pass. This group carried following winds all the way to the finish.
Flash and Dark Star made the bold move to sail out the less-travelled Active Pass and made it pay. Boats that chose Porlier Pass had the door slammed shut for hours and many made the decision to opt for the shorter course through Dodd Narrows only to run out of wind. The 'all to play for' leg 10 lived up to its reputation as the most tactically challenging leg and the results reflect that.
In true spirit of the event even boats who were stuck at various spots over the last leg, battled it out to finish in Nanaimo with the sense of accomplishment for completing the entire course around Vancouver Island the final goal.
Winners for the leg in Div. 1 were Dark Star, Flash and Icon. Div. 2 was Mojo, My Tai and Havoc and Div. 3 was California Girl, Por Favor and Ion.

Dragonfly won the coveted white flag for First to Finish leg 10 of the TELUS Van Isle 360 shaving 24 minutes off the previous record for the leg set in 2009. This is only the second record broken this year the other, also broken by Dragonfly, was leg 4 from Campbell River to Hardwicke.
June 19, 2011 - 0830 hrs. Nanaimo - The final overall awards presentation will take place today at 1100 hrs in Pioneer Plaza, downtown Nanaimo.
June 18, 2011 - 0915 hrs. Nanaimo - FLASH and Dark Star crossed the finish in Nanaimo overlapped with Flash prevailing by 4 secs. Their respective finish times were 03:06:31 and 03:06:35. Both boats sailed through Active Pass into the Strait of Georgia and around Gabriola Island. Icon crossed the line at 03:17:50 having sailed through Porlier Pass.
In Div. 2 Mojo was the first boat across the finish line with My Tai crossing 1 minute later. Havoc crossed third.
There are still boats out on the course. In Div. 3, Kotuku crossed first, followed by California Girl and Cinco de Mayo.
June 18, 2011 - 0040 hrs. Nanaimo - Dragonfly has finished in Nanaimo
June 17, 2011 - 1700 hrs. Victoria - The last and final leg of the TELUS Van Isle 360 started off Brotchie Ledge in Victoria. A brisk 20 knot breeze provided a tight reach for the 38 boats remaining in the race. Dark Star, Johnathan McKee's, Bieker 44 won the start, but it was the Tectron 50, Dolphin Dancer, who received the loudest cheer from spectators as she ripped through the fleet. Dolphin Dancer's crew is 3 generations of the same family.
Leg 10 takes the boats through the Gulf Island to Nanaimo and has multiple routes and tidal passes. It is considered the most tactically challenging and has the highest scoring co-efficient. The shortest route is 60 miles and the longest is 90.
John Denny's, Hobie 33, Por Favour, was the only boat to deek inside Discovery Island shaving off alot of distance and placing him well up with the leaders.

White Cloud just after the start in Ucluelet
June 16, 2011 - 1630 hrs - Victoria - Nothing but happy faces on the docks in Victoria today and a lot of sunburned teeth, after yesterday's textbook sleighride down from Ucluelet. This was a fast run for everyone with even the last boats finishing with good breeze in the early morning hours.
The crews are using this day to catch up on sleep and make some much needed repairs. Lots of socializing and bragging as they prepare for the tactically challenging last leg up through the Gulf Islands to Nanaimo.
Results for this leg will be posted after the awards ceremony tomorrow morning. The boats leave the docks in Victoria around noon tomorrow to prepare for the 1500 hr start off Ogden Point.

Mike McGarry, Jude Stoller, Morgan Tedrow - crew of Makika in Victoria
June 15, 2011, 2300 hrs. - Victoria - The first boat to cross the finish line off Ogden Point was the Formula 40 Cat. Dragonfly, at approximately 1945hr., with the little F25C trimaran, Makika, nipping at their heels. Icon followed a few minutes later.
Dragonfly sailed most of the leg without a spinnaker as the halyard had stripped its sheath and was unusable. The spinnaker subsequently fell in the water and was holed. Further damage was sustained when the boat hit a log at speed taking a chunk out of the daggerboard and causing a minor crack in the hull which was taking on water.
The Flying Tiger, My Tai was the first Div. 2 boat to finish.
June 15, 2011, 1700 hrs - Enroute to Victor,ia - A snapshot of the tracker as the fleet makes it way to Victoria. Each division seems to have its own opinion of the best route. The wind is currently 29kn at Race Rocks and 15-18kn at the finish line.

June 15, 2011, 1210 hrs - Enroute to Victoria - The long awaited westerly breeze finally showed up, in spades. A solid 20 knots and big swells on the start line at Amphitrite point made for perfect surfing conditions as the 38 boats remaining in the race got underway. If the forecast holds for the rest of the day, look for a new record on this leg.
The finish line is just inside Victoria Harbour. Good viewing from Ogden Point. The boats will tie at the Empress Floats downtown.
