Today is National Aboriginal Day and the town of Port Hardy held a First Nations festival to commemorate the day and to welcome the fleet to Port Hardy.
Tomorrow's leg is the first big offshore leg and the fleet will make their way over the top of the Island to the exposed west coast. The mood on the docks is one of tense excitement as the sailors digest the news of the gale force SE winds that are predicted tomorrow. Port Hardy is a big stop for crew changes and many boats bring in more experienced offshore sailors and heavier sails and gear for the outside legs.
The race committee will be on station at the Kain's Island Light Station, a remote site located at the mouth of Quatsino Sound,on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island, accessible only by boat.
June 21, 2007 - 1000 hrs - Telegraph Cove - Today was another light air start for the 42 boats participating in the Cadillac Van Isle 360 Yacht Race. 10 mins prior to the start the sea was glassy but was filling in as the race got underway. Time Bandit was the first boat over the start line.
The finish line is in Hardy Bay directly off the Government Pier with excellent spectator viewing. This is usually an exciting finish to watch.
