June 20, 2007 - Telegraph Cove - The F25C Trimaran, Makika, sailed by Jude Stoller set a new record for leg 5 of the Cadillac Van Isle 360. Makika finished the 40.30 nautical mile leg in a time of 5hr and 35 mins. more than one hour faster than the previous record holder, the Formula 40 Dragonfly.
While today's race started in a light SE breeze, it built over the day to 30 knots. Near the finish line, however, the wind fizzled out and boats were left with light flukey conditions. Jude Stoller, reported taking green water over his bows as he carried a full main and spinnaker in the strong winds. Flash however, opted for a more conservative approach to the strong wind by going bareheaded (no head sail or spinnaker) for several gybes.
Alakazam, a JDF 30, and Kairos, an Aerodyne 38, were both over the start line early and had to return to restart against the current. This didn't hurt Kairos though, they sailed a fantastic race and were the fourth boat to cross the finish line putting them in first place in their division.
Icon and Occam's Razor were so close to the shore at the start that the race committee commented, "If a tree fell it would take them out."
Everyone had the opportunity to try out every sail they had onboard and all had a fantastic day on the water.
The awards reception at Telegraph Cove was held in the Telegraph Cove Whale Research Museum amongst the marine mammal skeletons. A very cool place for a cool event.
The hosts of the event were Gordie Graham from Telegraph Cove Resorts, Jim & Mary Borrowmen from Stubbs Island Whale Watching and Bud Wagner from Dockside 29.
Tomorrow's leg starts at 0900 hrs and goes from Telegraph Harbour to Port Hardy.
