LEG 10 - CADILLAC VAN ISLE 360 - ANOTHER FAST RUN

July 1, 2007 - Nanaimo - 0900 hrs.  - Icon, owned by Dick Robbins of Seattle, set yet another record in the Cadillac Van Isle 360.  She crossed the leg 10 finish line in Nanaimo Harbour at 00:56:10 shaving slightly more than an hour off the previous record for the leg.

Dick Robbins (Icon) wins coveted "first to finsh flag' for Leg 10.

This was a fast leg for everyone and most boats finished by dawn.  All had a beautiful sail, running or close reaching under a bright clear moon, with SW winds up to 15 knots.  Several multihulls reported hitting speeds of over 18 knots.

The 74 foot Atalanta had a fantastic sail crossing the finish line just a few minutes after Flash and Capricorno.  As she entered Nanaimo harbour, she chose to sail around the two rivals who were engaged in a gybing duel.  The mighty Atalanta utilized the "Big M" (momentum) and ate it up at the finish, earning a second place in Division for the leg.  As Atalanta prefers open ocean she opted for the longest route out Haro Strait and into the Strait of Georgia, skirting around the outside of the Gulf Islands.

As is usual for this leg some boats sailed outside, some went inside the Gulf Islands and some split the difference.  Icon, sailed up Tricomali Channel and deeked out into the Strait through Porlier Pass.  Others found themselves stuck at Dodd Narrows with no wind.

HMCS Oriole had to withdraw from this leg due to rig failure.  The top 18 inches of her aging wooden main mast sheared off, dropping sails and rigging on the deck and in the ocean. Skipper and crew did a masterful job of sorting the mess without incident and Oriole is now back in Esqimalt for  a thorough checkup. She was greatly missed by the entire Cadillac Van Ilse 360 fleet at the finish.
Absolute Kaos (Reigh North), Mad Max (Micah Vanderheide), Time Bandit (Bob Brunius)

Winners for this leg were:  Div. 1 - Icon, Atalanta, Capricorno; Div. 2 - Absolute Kaos, Mad Max, Time Bandit; Div. 3 - Karina II, Tracks, Wind Child and in the multihulls Blue Lightning placed first.

The overall results and final winners for the event will be announced today at the final awards reception.  The reception takes place in the Harbourfront Plaza in downtown Nanaimo at 1100 hrs.

Leg 10 start - Victoria

June 29, 2007 - Malahat Mountain Inn - 1700 hrs.  -  The last leg of the Cadillac Van Isle 360 got underway at 1400 hrs with light southwesterlies and pouring rain.  A strong flood tide convinced every skipper to be conservative on the start line.  Not one of the 41 competitors was even close to being over early.  The J120 Time Bandit got the best start and all boats were moving well under spinnaker as they crossed the line.

Much to the surprise of spectators all boats, with the exception of one, left Trial Island to port.  Dilligaf, a Ross 930 from Nanaimo, in a brave move slipped through on the inside of Trial Island with a river of positive current.  Unfortunately they bounced off the reef as they rejoined the fleet.  At the time it looked like it would pay off big time.

The fleet, led by Capricorno, rounded Ten Mile Point in light airs and good current attempting to position themselves for the forecasted south west breeze.

As of 1730 hrs. Hushwings reported 17 boats in their vicinity off Henry Island in an 8 knot SW breeze.

If the SW breeze builds as predicted the inside route could prove to be a dream run through the Gulf Islands.   More Later......

LEG 10 - VICTORIA TO NANAIMO
Getting Ready in Victoria

June 29, 2007 - Victoria BC-0900 hrs. - The last and final leg of the Cadillac Van Isle 360 departs today at 1400 hrs off Ogden Point.  Red Heather has made the necessary repairs to her standing rigging and will be joining the rest of the fleet on the start line.

With a scoring co-efficient of 10 this final leg, through the Gulf Islands, has the highest scoring value in the series and though it is sailed in protected waters it is one of the most challenging to navigate.  The talk at the start of this leg, is which route will prove the fastest - the shorter inside route through the Gulf Islands, the outside route around the Gulf Islands into the Strait of Georgia, or a combination of the two?  While the shortest route is through the Gulf Islands it is fraught with strong tidal passes and fickle winds.  The route around the outside is 30 miles longer.

The fastest time this leg has been sailed is 12 hours and 10 mins and was set sailing the shortest possible distance through the Gulf Islands by way of both Sansum and Dodd Narrrows.  This record was set by the F31 Trimaran, Redshift, in 2001 sailed by the organizers of the event.

The leaders going into this final leg are as follows:  Div. 1, Flash, Icon and Occam's Razor; Div 2, Mad Max, Kairos and Asolute Kaos; Div 3 Betty Boop, Tryst and Wind Child and Div. 4 Makika.

Leading on Elapsed Time is Icon with a time of 66:08 followed by Flash at 68:53, Capricorno's time is 71:51 and Makika with 72:38.
